md5sum is a program that generates 128-bit checksums of a list of files.
If you have a problem opening or running a file downloaded from our site, checking the md5sum can tell you if the problem is in the file itself, or if some bad data has been created during the transfer. The idea is that you generate checksums at your end and compare those to the numbers we've generate here to verify that the transfer is error free.
The md5sum program is normally part of Linux, and IRIX and Windows versions can be easily found on the internet.
